Coach Nicole Stone-Lankes
“I love learning. I love sharing what I learn. I love helping people feel their best!”
My career in exercise began twenty-five years ago, but it really didn’t get exciting until four years ago. Here is why: I got very sick. The list of my symptoms were endless. My back hurting constantly. I had a hyper heart when I laid down to sleep every night. I had fevers. I was anxious. My left foot felt limp. Basically, I physical hurt all the time. I also had inflammation (acne) on my face and my libido had changed. I knew something was wrong, but unfortunately, I couldn’t find a cure or any answers the traditional way. It was then that I met a C.H.E.K Institute and a Kalish functional medicine practitioner. This is when my world began to change for the better.
Once I was on board with a non-conventional practitioner, I decided the best approach to getting to the root causes of my aches, pains and inflammation, was to perform stool and spit tests. My results were astounding. Little did I know that I had been living with a major gut infection for at least a year, called Cryptosporidium, a type of Giardia, in addition to an abundance of enterococcus. The gut infection was putting me into flight or fight mode in order for my body to fight the infection. The abundance of enterococcus was directly related to my all-consuming allergies and sinus infections that I suffered from my whole life. All that Claritin D, Nasonex and antibiotics for my sinus infections were just putting a Band-Aid on my symptoms, not the real gut issue. It was safe to say, I desperately needed to heal my gut appropriately!
Now, don’t think for one minute that I was given a magic pill. That wouldn’t make for a good story or outcome. Remember, I had already been down that dead end road. Instead, I had a lot of hard work ahead of me if I wanted to heal, and stop being sick and tired of being, literally, sick and tired. So what did I do? I changed my lifestyle, and the food I put in my mouth. I followed a protocol of supplements three times a day to heal myself from the inside out. In simple terms, I had to work in, not out. This wasn’t easy, but I believe nothing is worthwhile if it is given to you. I think the toughest part of the whole process was that I had to completely shift the way I thought about health and exercise after educating myself for 25 years in this industry, and I had to become my own advocate… hallelujah for that!
After just six months of the protocols and making life changes, I began feeling a huge weight come off me. I really didn’t know how bad I felt until I started feeling better. A year later, I was back racing triathlons without back pain and a limp left foot. I ditched all the allergy medicine I had taken for decades. And in two-years time, I completed three sprint triathlons in one summer, and kept all allergies and sinus infections at bay. I could handle the many more stresses of life without getting sick.
I felt like I struck gold, and when I come into fortune, I must share! So, I did what made sense to me. I became a C.H.E.K Exercise Coach because it not only spoke to me, it healed me. As I was eating, drinking this stuff in, I had the greatest fortune: Julie Harrington walked into 8750ALT. She wanted to learn why I was doing what I was doing. It was so different than the personal training and “one-size-fit-all” approach we both witnessed for the past 20 years. She was so intrigued that she jumped on board and healed her ailments through this system as well. And she not only became a C.H.E.K exercise coach, but she became a certified functional practitioner through the Kalish Institute and can perform lab testing and protocols to help all of us from the inside out!
It goes without saying, I feel so fortunate to be here today, to share this story. I am hopeful that those who are at their wit’s end with conventional practices, and are self-motivated to get down to the root problem, will take the first step by meeting with us at 8750ALT.

Then in 2003, my life took another turn and I became an electrician. I found this type of work physically challenging, which was fun at first, but again I wasn’t being fulfilled. During those 13 years as an electrician, I suffered from several injuries, not all work-related, that forced me to change my active lifestyle. I could no longer run, hike, bike, snowshoe or ski. You name it, I couldn’t do it because my back hurt and even walking was painful. After several knee surgeries, a few back injuries, and numerous other injuries, I found myself unable to participate in most activities that used to bring me so much joy and happiness. So I began the long and never ending road to heal myself. I tried the conventional route – doctor’s, physical therapy, even chiropractic, but nothing helped for long. Knowing there must be an answer, I continued searching. I decided to try physical therapy one last time, so I scheduled an appointment with Derek Tuohy of Balanced Physical Therapy. Derek gave me more help than I had received before, and insisted that I join the gym and start working out. Thankfully I did because soon enough, I met Nicole Stone-Lankes. She explained to me how she was using the C.H.E.K approach to help heal herself and her clients. She gave me some material to review and that was it! I found it! Finally, I knew I could help myself.
Within six months of this new discovery, I became a certified C.H.E.K practitioner and Nicole became my mentor. No, changing my career path and learning a new skill wasn’t easy. Here I was studying again, and much time was spent at the gym shadowing Nicole as she worked with clients. It did require sacrifice, especially for Nicole (haha), but it was so worth it. After much hard work on my own, and some help from bodywork, I am now able to run and hike again! Before, most days I would wake up in pain. Now I wake up pain-free and feel so much better physically. I feel strong.
But that isn’t the end of my story. Since so many people are dealing with health issues that the conventional medical model isn’t able to successfully address, I became a certified Kalish Method practitioner which involves lifestyle evaluation and functional medical tests to address health. Using this method helps people help themselves by identifying and treating underlying causes rather than treating symptoms. Many of us have internal issues that affect the way we function physically. Using the Kalish Method allows me to get to the root of my client’s issue, which pairs nicely with my exercise coach program.
A few years ago I was looking for a new direction in life. Wow! I had no idea just how big the change would be. I love being at 8750ALT and working with Nicole. I love sharing what I have learned with other people and seeing them get better. It is truly gratifying.
